News Update - November  2010

The end of October is always a really bad time for the animals here on Corfu and since returning to help some of the strays before the winter comes we have had the most terrible weather. After a good summer here in Corfu it unfortunately ended very abruptly when the rains arrived at the end of September and continued throughout October and now after a short sunny warm spell the storms have come and with avengence!!! So very  unusual for this time of year. It has made our work a little difficult as we cannot catch the wild cats when the weather is so bad, most are hidden away, but we have helped several sick ones and managed to neuter a few more, again we have had requests for help from Greek people and we have sterilised a couple of dogs this year too.

We have only been able to do this because we are getting good support from so many of you out there and from visitors to the Island.  We would like to thank you all very much.

Another Cruelty Case
Unfortunately we are still finding some awful cases of cruelty even in those resorts that you all love so much, the late visitors to Kalami had to see this poor cat in a terrible condition on their holidays. Despite having so many lovely Greek people help us with the animals we still have those that continue to show little care or respect for them. This is a cat that we found in Kalami, we believe one of the taverna owners had thrown hot water at him.

He has now been treated by the vet and his skin is healing although he will be scarred for life as the fur will never grow over all his scars. Despite his treatment he is the friendliest little boy you could ever wish to meet and we are now working on getting him passported and into the UK. He will be at risk if he remains in Corfu next summer,  with no fur on the scars he will easily get burnt by the hot sun.

A very kind and sympathetic visitor to Kalami donated money for us to sterilise this little boy and we were looking for a sponsor and someone to adopt him in the UK, but we are very pleased that we have found someone to take him and so in the springtime he will be going to the UK to his new life, a better life than he has had up to now.

We do have another cat that is looking for a permanent home in the UK so if anyone would be interested in taking a cat on please do contact us. email - info@agni-animal-welfare-fund.com I will reply to you and make contact in the UK. I would be happy to meet anyone who would seriously like to adopt the little girl we have.

Our second little boy to be found in a terribly distressed state, cold, dirty, wet and hungry, was found in San Stephanos (West) when a tourist called Cheryl and asked her to go and look at him.  We believe he may have been taken ill and not being able to care for himself just deteriorated until the tourists found him. Cheryl is still caring for him and if he recovers we would like someone to sponsor him or even adopt him too, - but we have to wait a while and see what progress he makes - we may have been a little late finding him but Cheryl is giving him a good chance?

Looking at these pictures, I think Cheryl only just got to him in time. How could people just ignore a cat as sick as this, he must have been seen by many people before someone called for help. Cheryl has done a very good job with him, he is on medication and hopefully will be up for sponsorship or even adoption if someone would like to take him to the UK.

Blossom (above - looking for a sponsor) was picked up from the road after a car accident. She looked as though she could not possibly recover from her ordeal but surprisingly she has made an excellent recovery. She can stay in Corfu but we would like a sponsor to neuter her.

Xmas is fast approaching and we need sponsors for many of the cats and kittens we are helping so if anyone wants to sponsor a cat for Xmas please consider one of the little guys pictured above. If anyone can raise any funds for us this Xmas it would be great.

Homes Needed
We still require people to volunteer to help us by taking in a stray cat or kitten from time to time as so many special cases arise and desperately need regular food and someone to keep an eye on them. If anyone living in Corfu can take on a kitten as an outdoor cat and ensure that they get food and have shelter and some protection from the bad weather in the wintertime we will sterilise any cat that is taken on and pay for any medication. Please email info@agni-animal-welfare-fund.com if you can help.

News Update - July  2010

Help, Support and Thanks
Having enjoyed the lovely Spring weather that arrived in Corfu the same day as ourselves, we returned to the UK for some work and updates to the charity, returning very shortly. We would like to thank everyone over in Corfu that is helping to raise funds for us and keeping an eye on the local strays. A special thanks goes to Alex of 'Agni Boats' who arranged an 'Animal Day' for us at Agni beach, along with Toulas restaurant at the start of the season in May. Thanks to all that supported us, we would have liked to have seen a few more people but we do understand that Corfu is much quieter this year so we are grateful for those that did come along to meet and support us.

We have collecting boxes in various locations in Corfu and if you wish to support us do visit those places. You will find one in the reception area of the A&A and Spiros who works at the A&A is very willing to help with any problems you may come across with the animals. Earlier in the year he managed to return a baby owl to its mother, that had managed to fall out of its nest. The owl had made a nest high up in one of the villas in Kalami and it was quite a shock to the visitors staying there to find a baby owl on their patio!!

Thanks to spiros for helping out, don't hesitate to ask if he can help, should you encounter an animal problem.

We have several collecting boxes in Kassiopi, but we understand it is quieter there this year than in the past but do visit Costas bar and Illusions who are both supporting us with collecting for the strays this year.  Toulas in Agni and Agni Taverna support the charity too and help the local strays so do pay them a visit where you will enjoy really good food, great for that 'special' night out.

For the Sidari fans visit Jennies Cafe for some lovely homemade English style tea and cakes.  Jennie does alot of work for the local strays in Sidari along with Cheryl especially during the winter months when the visitors have gone. Visit the 'Orchard' located just outside Sidari towards Peroulades for lunch or dinner where Debbie and George will give you a warm welcome both really kind supporters of AAWF who also see many cats are fed during the winter.

For any 'Divers' visiting Corfu this year visit Chris at Nissaki beach, he can offer some really nice dives, there are some lovely sites around the Agni/Nissaki area and he also offers training and dives for the novice divers. As divers ourselves we recommend apollo dive center, the equipment is in good condition and the instructors experienced divers.

An Act of Deliberate Cruelty
A really distressing email was received recently from a visitor to Corfu. It is not my policy to name and shame restaurants but then, it is not necessary to openly show public cruelty to holiday makers either. So when I was informed that a waiter at the Taverna on Keresia beach deliberately threw hot water over a cat in front of holiday makers I was horrified. Since we have been working to help the animals in Corfu, I have been so thrilled and pleased at the help and support we get from the local greek people so this incident is rare, but we were very upset to hear of this deliberate act of cruelty and were asked if there was anything we could do. Unfortunately Greece does not have laws to protect animals a we do, so there is very little other than to make the incident known to visitors and ask people not to give them their custom. The people who experienced this awful incident did speak to the waiter and told them of their disgust and said they would never return to their Taverna but they showed no interest and did not care at all. Maybe a boycott of this Taverna may make them care in the future!

We are well aware that not everyone likes animals and we do not expect everyone to, but there is no excuse for cruelty openly and in public even if there is dislike for animals. Holiday makers do not want to experience such events on their holiday and it is not going to help Corfu, or Greece's tourism in already difficult times. We do advise Taverna owners that if they feed the local strays with their scraps away from the tables before the customers arrive, the cats would not bother the customers during their meals. Many Tavernas do this and it does work.

--------------------------------

All the charities in Corfu are overwhelmed with animals this year due to the reduction in tourists and of course this means the funds are much reduced also, so if you are in a position to be able to help, you could be saving the life of an animal that may not otherwise survive. Winter will soon be approaching and it is the summer time that we have to raise funds to see us through the long winter months, so please help if you can.

Well schools out tomorrow so we hope everyone enjoys the holidays, especially if you are visiting Corfu, for those of you that are, have fun and maybe see you there.

Fund Raisers badly needed - can you help us by doing some fund raising in the UK for us. If you want to help the Corfu cats you may be able to raise some money for us at spring fairs, sponsored walks, car boots, coffee mornings etc. Please contact me if you can help.

News Update March/April  2010

We returned to Corfu early in March, we waited in Venice in a blizzard to board the ferry to Corfu to arrive the next day in beautiful warm spring sunshine. It has been warm and sunny ever since with very little rain, cool evenings but it is still a little early in the year so only to be expected. Easter was lovely and it is slowly getting warmer so a really nice early start to the warm weather.

We have already helped several sick cats, successfully, with the exception of one and it would be nice to get some more neutering done. We are very short of funds now and things are very quiet with not so much support as in the past, we know that times are difficult both in the UK and here in Greece but if we are to continue to help the animals here we really do need more help and more funding. So if anyone can spare anything towards helping these street animals we would be grateful.

We have the opportunity to help some more Greek people by neutering several female cats but need donations to do so, so please please if you can help us by sponsoring a Greek cat we can continue to neuter. The costs have of course increased at the vets (which we expected this year) with all the extra taxes being imposed on them, so the 50 we ask is no longer covering the cost of a neuter. We don't like to ask for more as every little helps but anyone wishing to sponsor the full cost would now have to donate  60. We still need sponsors for the cats above and more for the Greek people who have asked us to help them.

Please if you can sponsor a cat please email us at info@agni-animal-welfare-fund.com.

News Update January 2010

A Happy New Year to everyone, sorry it is a little late but January is a busy time of year for most of us. Thank you to everyone of you that supported us throughout 2009 and we hope you will be able to continue to help us during 2010. When we return to Corfu in the Spring we will continue with the neutering as long as we continue to receive your support. When we return we will put more cats and kittens up for sponsorship on the website.

We were very pleased to be able to help some of the Greek people that came to us to ask for our help last year. The people who came to us care for and feed many cats but were very concerned that when the cats started to breed again this Spring they would be unable to afford to feed them all. It was very rewarding for us to be able to help these people as we felt that more of the local people are beginning to see that neutering does help and is a solution to the over population of stray cats. Thank you to all of you who sponsored those cats for the Greek people. We still have a few cats featured above that would like sponsors, we can them move on and help more Greek people.

Winter Feeding
Although I cannot be in Corfu at the present time I would like to thank those people that are out there, living in Corfu and helping the many strays by making sure that they receive food during the winter time. We have people in Kalami, St.Spiridon, Kassiopi and Sidari feeding in the streets so if anyone can help by donating food please contact me. I can advise you where to take the food depending upon where you are living. No doubt there are many more people in Corfu doing the same that we don't know about, so a thank you to you all too and keep up the good work.
